Save Spelthorne Gymnastics Club - #homelesschampions

July 08, 2015

As some of you may know Bob Cooper, Director of Disputes UK, runs a well-known gymnastics club in London which is unfortunately threatened with eviction and closure.  He needs some ‘Systech Support’!

Spelthorne Gymnastics Club has around 1,000 children attending classes per week, and has served the local community for nearly 40 years.  It has gymnasts currently preparing for the European Championships and has produced numerous national and international champions in the past achieving over 70 World and European medals. The current men’s pair world champions train at the gym almost every day.

Brooklands took over the site in 2007, advising the club that their lease would not be terminated, however, in 2013 Brooklands suddenly gave the Club the minimum of two years’ notice required by the lease to vacate by June 2015. Contradicting this decision, in 2014, Brooklands advertised the land sale on a different basis with the prospective purchaser being advised both Brooklands and the Club would not vacate until September 2016. This would allow for more time to build another gym at another site. During negotiations and without warning to the Club, Brooklands decided to allow immediate possession to the Purchaser of the land occupied by the Club whilst protecting its own tenure on adjacent land until September 2016.

The Club has until the 20th July 2015 to vacate the building. By signing the petition the club has a chance to extend the lease which would allow the Club to complete its new facility in 2016 and transfer its members and staff seamlessly.
